But where did it all start? Here's my story 👇

In 2008, while working full time in the most mundane office job, I started a small recording studio (it was very small, with a home made recording booth that could barely fit a drum kit). Everyone thought I was naive, stupid or just didn't want to work a "real job".

I had a £5k business loan. On day one I got scammed on ebay while trying to buy a £2k piece of equipment. I had a £3k business loan.

I used what was left of my startup cash to buy all the equipment I would need, software and 6 months rent.

I would literarily run from the office to my little studio everyday at lunch time, squeeze in 30 mins of Myspace marketing, emails etc and run back.

After work, I would head back to the studio to record clients (the few I actually had) from 6pm until 12am. Get the 1am bus back home and do it all again the next day.

4 years later the studio business crawled to a whimpering failure. I thought it was the end of the world! I decided to apply for job seekers allowance / benefits while looking for employment. I was told that "because I had been self employed for the past 4 years I would not actually qualify for job seekers benefits" - but why? I thought, "screw this" and decided to go back to my little studio (that I still had for another few weeks) and start again!

I thought about what else I could use the equipment and space for? A few good microphones, a recording booth barely big enough for a drum kit? Ah ha! I could switch to a B2B model and record voice overs for radio & Spotify ads (yes, Spotify ads where new and exciting at that point) as well as telephone on hold messages.

And so Bigmouth Audio was born. I spent that first year (2012) promoting the business as an audio marketing company, an audio post studio and voice over agency! I wanted to see what would stick or resonate with my prospects.

Luckily, a local animation studio (very local; they had the office above me) approached me to provide sound design, music and voice over services for some short animations. From this point on, Bigmouth became "the specialists in sound for animation" - I had found my niche without even knowing it!

Fast forward a few years and I had steadily been getting by month to month. I could just about pay my bills! I then found out that my partner was expecting our first child (shout out to my main man Noah!) and I thought to myself "I really need to up my game and figure out how to really run a business!". And so that's exactly what I did.

Without investment we have grown to have a team of people, we have truly world-class audio studios in the UK as well as a production offices in Toronto and Los Angeles and collaborate with clients all over the globe.

Our Glasgow head office is a Netflix partner studio (something I am most proud of) and we count Disney, HBO, BBC as clients. We also work with some of the world's leading animation studios.

I believe hugely in telling great stories and that great stories = great memories. This is our driving purpose at Bigmouth Audio and always will be.
