About the Author: Ruan Oelofsen
Hi, I’m Ruan Oelofsen. I am a 19-year-old author, poet, and digital creative based in Pretoria, South Africa. For me, writing is more than just putting words on a page; it is a lens through which I view the human experience, a way to translate complex emotions, and a tool to better understand the world around us.
My Journey Living with Cerebral Palsy has shaped my perspective on resilience from a young age. Three years ago, I faced another profound challenge: the loss of my father. In the silence and confusion that followed, I turned to writing as my anchor. Instead of avoiding the pain, I chose to confront it by documenting my journey. This led to the publication of my debut memoir, The Drive Through Grief With Me (2026). This book is not merely a collection of memories; it is an outstretched hand to other young people—especially those navigating life with a disability or dealing with loss—who are looking for a way forward.
Beyond the Page My world is not limited to pen and paper. I have a deep fascination with technology—from assembling computer hardware to mastering complex software. I identify as an auditory learner, which means the rhythm of music and the narrative power of podcasts shape both my creative process and my daily life. This technical curiosity and creative mindset go hand-in-hand with my identity; my unique lens allows me to approach problems and storytelling from an angle others might overlook.
The Path Forward Currently, I am focused on expanding my online home, Chronicles, where my writing comes to life—ranging from my candid memoir to my latest creative ventures. I am currently drafting a spy thriller series, which has allowed me to explore my imagination in a completely new way.
My goal is to be a voice that not only addresses the realities of today but also offers hope. Whether I am writing about the complexities of grief or the nuances of living with CP, I invite my readers to join me as we explore, feel, and grow together.
