About Me

First Time Indie Filmmaker Tells All

Hi. My name is Rob Mabry. I'm a Texas-based indie filmmaker who just completed my first feature film, The Legend of El Chupacabra, a horror-comedy. The film is a B-movie creature feature comedy that's been described as the "Napoleon Dynamite of cryptid films." The film features amazing practical creature effects designed by Sergio Guerra, a competitor on SyFy's show Face Off. The movie is set to release on DVD/Blu-ray on May 10, 2024 and is queued up for a streaming launch shortly after.

As the writer, director, producer and editor of the film, I can share what it's like to wear many hats on a film project and what it takes to soldier through the challenges and make the dream of seeing your feature film on the big (and little) screen.

I've got a passion for comedy and especially the horror-comedy genre and love to talk about how to develop an idea into a completed script then take it to the next level. As a director, I'm passionate about helping new directors understand how to execute their vision and be successful on set often through anecdotes of my own failures and lessons learned. Film funding, post-production and distribution are other areas I can share with your audience.

I've been a writer all my life and always dreamed of having one of my screenplays made into a feature film. While I never achieved those "Hollywood dreams," I came to the realization that there was a way for me to cross the biggest bucket list item I had off the list, making a feature film. I started writing shorts and filming them myself. Results weren't great to start, but I practiced and studied and got better. After making over 20 short films, I declared myself ready to make a feature.

I spent nearly a year writing and rewriting "The Legend of El Chupacabra" until I was satisfied the script was worthy of production. I crowdfunded and self-funded and got the budget together to make the movie. We filmed on weekends and after 20 days of crazy filming in South Texas, the movie was in the can. From there, I went into the editing bay and cut the film. It was the most amazing adventure of my life and I'm incredibly proud of the results.

I'd love to share my experiences with your audience. Check out our electronic press kit and IMDb page for more info on the project. You can follow us on social media @thechupacabramovie on FB and Instagram. Thanks!
