I am sadly sharing this very sad story with you all. It is heart wrenching to think that this could ever happen in NYC in 2024. Better yet, Brooklyn. A city well known for its support of immigrants.
This petition originates from a personal and heartbreaking story - the story of Michael Reeves, a victim of corruption and abuse at the hands of those charged to protect us. Michael spent over seven exhausting years in immigration custody, partly due to the NYPD's collusion with NY-ICE. Despite not having been in any trouble for nearly 36 years, Michael was illegally deported once and brutally beaten by NY-ICE officers in 2018.
This attack led to a broken shoulder and necessitated two emergency surgeries. Michael emerged victorious after a grueling legal battle against these injustices and won his immigration case in 2019 (Reeves vs. The City of New York 24-cv-2408). Unfortunately, his victory was marred when the NYPD, in collusion with NY-ICE, orchestrated a baseless arrest to provide grounds for NY-ICE’s arrest.
The men retaliated after Michael case against them went into settlement mediation. They followed him. They intimidated him and used racial slurs. They also used a type of energy device to torture him. All of this is documented and supported by evidence. This is not the type of world that we should be living in. Michael was unjustly beaten by NY-ICE. He suffered a broken right shoulder. He had two emergency surgeries. His shoulder is permanently damaged. Now, a federal judge has ORDERED NY-ICE to settle the case with him. There should not be retaliation and torture. Importantly, NYPD Officers should not have baselessly arrested an innocent man and charge him only to apologize and release him after damaging his record with a baseless arrest record.
This petition isn’t just about Michael; it’s about holding our law enforcement agencies accountable for their actions. Corruption within the NYPD stands as an affront to justice and the rule of law. This case demonstrates the urgent need for an impartial investigation into the NYPD's alleged corruption.
