Maureen Monteiro

I’m Moe and I am an alcoholic. I have given the better part of the last 20 years of my life to alcohol. I finally had to admit to myself and to my family and loved ones that I was struggling and that I was close to death. I am 43 years old and I have decompensated cirrhosis. The reason is shamefully obvious, I spent 20 years drinking my way through every good day every bad day, every good night every bad night, every holiday, until my organs shut down. I didn’t fight going to a wellness center. I knew I needed help. I came out of there a completely different person than I remember ever being. I felt free and light and not lonely for the first time since I could remember. I love going to meetings and telling my story and hearing the stories of others. Sharing my experience, strength and hope is one of many things that helps me to stay sober and I will always be happy to lend an ear to anyone that is worried about their own drinking
