About Mari Amor

At 4 a.m. on a July morning in Nashville, Tenn., theologian and author Mari Amor woke to a hand on her shoulder and a voice telling her, “Let’s go. You’ll make it straight there if you drive now.” The following month, she was on the road with her backseat stuffed with a hammock, camera equipment, and clothes needed for an open-ended trip. Eighteen hours later, she crossed into New Mexico for what would become a two-week, day-by-day encounter with Jesus that reshaped her life.

Amor’s new book, Door in the Desert: A Journey Through Spiritual Healing, Self-Discovery & Hearing the Voice of God (Fedd Books, March 23, 2027), is for anyone who has ever wondered whether the voice they heard was real, for the spiritually gifted who’ve been misunderstood or isolated, for those deconstructing or grieving a faith they can’t quite let go of, and for skeptics and seekers who suspect there’s more to reality than the material world.

Door in the Desert follows her journey through the mountain trails, hot springs, and desert dunes of New Mexico where she wrestled with grief, family estrangement, and the fear that she might be losing her mind. Raised in a highly controlling religious community that taught women shouldn’t pray aloud and treated any claim to hear from God as either demonic or delusional, Amor spent years suppressing spiritual experiences she’d had since early childhood.

A separate encounter with Jesus in 2016, a year before the trip itself, finally broke that silence open, which cost her nearly everything. Family relationships fractured, her community turned on her, and for months afterward, she quietly hoped a doctor would diagnose her with schizophrenia because that felt safer than accepting what she believed she’d heard.

The New Mexico trip that followed is recounted across 16 chapters, each pairing Amor’s own story with profiles of biblical prophets and historical mystics, many of whom were branded heretics in their own time. Each chapter closes with a journal prompt, inviting readers to ask the same questions of their own lives.

Amor began writing the book in earnest after a 2025 dream in which she drove a childhood friend—raised in the same restrictive community she was—on that same New Mexico trip.

As she writes in the book, “My pages will be your invitation... your map to walking out of grief, chaos, unbelief, fear, and religion as it was mine.” Amor holds a Master of Divinity in Critical Interpretation of the Old Testament and has spent more than a decade preaching, teaching, and walking one-on-one with people learning to discern God’s voice for themselves.
