“I'm a British Chartered Chemical Engineer, photographer and trumpet player who likes a good chat or moan (in roughly equal proportion!)”

Interests

About Me

I'll try and break this down by the different areas, because they’re rather diverse to say the least.

If some of the below gels with you it’d be great to have an introductory chat to see our fit.

Chemical Engineering

I am a scientist by trade and I am currently employed as a Senior Chemical Engineer working in the EPC contracting industry (basically the design of chemical plants). I love my work. I’d more than happy to discuss anything from process simulation, pressure relief, and hydraulics, to HAZOP, P&IDs and equipment sizing.

I also really get a kick out of passing on knowledge and helping out the next generation. As a STEM ambassador I have experience teaching young people about engineering and giving careers advice.

See my LinkedIn for more experience history or drop me a message.

Photography

It’s hard to say if photography or playing music is my “main” hobby. I love to visit new places and there is rarely time I don’t have a camera with me. I also do professional work for weddings/gigs here and there.

Happy to argue about discuss gear (I’m a Nikon boy), but probably more importantly the motivation behind and the joy that can be gained from taking photos.

There is a quite a bit to see and read over at www.jonprobert.co.uk, or my adobe portfolio.

Musician

I am a cornet/trumpet player, and a current member of the UK national champion brass band, Foden’s Band. I started playing when I was a wee lad of 9 so have been playing 23 years as I write this.

My ‘soap box’ topics

The following is a non-exhaustive list of topics I may have strong opinions about!

  • History, and more specifically Engineering history (industrial revolution, steam railways).
  • Social media being just awful.
  • The importance of good grammar.
  • Fantasy novels (Kingkiller Chronicle, Gentlemen Bastards, Joe Abercrombie, anything Sanderson, LotR, Potter, etc).
  • Totally unnecessary but awesome stationary items. Field notes, fountain pens, mechanical pencils...
  • John Lewis is brilliant.
  • Mechanical sympathy!
  • Shopping for clothes twice a year is more than enough.
  • Lego
  • Making Jam
  • Bird watching
  • Brian Blessed is a national treasure.
  • Tech and tech software (Adobe suite, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro etc)
  • We must never stop learning.
