About Me

Elizabeth Ann Besa-Quirino is a New Jersey-based award-winning journalist, food writer, cookbook author and memoirist. Her writing focuses on Filipino food, culture, history and personalities. Born and raised in the Philippines, her new memoir Every Ounce of Courage was inspired by her mother's courage and heroism in the face of insurmountable obstacles. Her mother was Lourdes Reyes Besa, a humanitarian aid worker, one of the first Filipina civilians awarded the US Medal of Freedom (twice in 1947) by President Harry Truman, for bringing food, aid and medicines to American and Filipino POWs in prison camps during WWII in the Philippines. As she uncovers her mother's heroic story, Elizabeth Ann shows readers of the memoir, how food is the thread that binds us with recipes and cooking anecdotes from her mother's life.

In her food writing, Elizabeth Ann is a recipe contributor for Simply Recipes; and a correspondent for the digital culture and lifestyle magazine Positively Filipino. She is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP). Elizabeth travels often to her home in the Philippines in search of stories about traditional Filipino cooking, culture, and history.
