My name is Derek. I am Active Duty Air Force for 18 years, my job is a Cryptologic Language Analyst (I translate Korean for the military). I have a wife and 3 children, plus a cat. I have lived in Korea for 5 years, taught Intelligence for 4 years, done Martial Arts for a majority of my life, and loved learning about every random thing I came across. I have recently inherited a podcast for military members focused to the unit I am assigned at Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
Paradise comes with it's own challenges from which hikes are best for families, what COVID-related restrictions are affecting which beaches, and how many of the SCUBA businesses are giving military discounts during this time of financial instability. The challenges that we face as military members are not always unique and a majority of them are the same as every societal group encounters as we are, in essence, just a small sliver of the society. We deal with certain traumas that most Americans do not, but little by little, the Air Force has made great efforts to ensure that mental health is a top priority.
I have always enjoyed having conversations with people and I find that the more I learn about others, the more I learn about myself. I have recently come to the realization that the lack of communication humans tend to have with one another, true communication, is the cause of the majority of issues we are facing today.
