“Entrepreneur | 25+ years building businesses | 17 years in gold & commodities | Challenging how mining gets financed, built and scaled.”
I'm Darby Angel, an entrepreneur and mining operator with more than 25 years of experience building businesses across technology, commodities and other industries, including 17 years working across physical gold, mining and commodities in Africa and international markets.
Today I'm based permanently in Tanzania, where I'm directly involved in developing and scaling gold mining and processing operations.
But the story I'm particularly interested in discussing isn't simply another mining project.
It's whether we need to rethink how mines are built in the first place.
The traditional mining-development model can involve years of exploration, drilling, fundraising, more drilling, more fundraising and enormous capital expenditure before meaningful production begins.
I'm working from a different premise:
Prove it. Produce it. Scale it.
Get close to the ground. Understand the geology. Establish production. Build processing capacity. Generate cash flow. Reinvest. Scale what works.
That experience has also led me to challenge some other uncomfortable assumptions around gold and African mining.
Everyone wants finished gold — but who funds its creation?
What actually justifies the discounts buyers routinely seek from African producers?
Where does legitimate due diligence end and perceived “Africa risk” begin?
Can independent verification replace some of the risk the market currently prices through discounts?
Why does Africa export so much of its mineral value instead of capturing more through processing, infrastructure, expertise and capital formation?
And what happens when investors, producers and buyers become genuinely aligned rather than simply negotiating against each other?
I don't claim to have every answer.
What I can bring to a podcast is the perspective of someone actually operating on the ground, dealing with the distance between what looks good in a presentation and what it takes to turn opportunity into physical production.
I'm particularly interested in conversations around:
• The future of mining in Africa
• Gold and physical commodity markets
• Building mines differently
• Mining investment and capital
• Moving from exploration to production
• Gold processing and value creation
• Buyer versus producer economics
• Risk, trust and independent verification
• Entrepreneurship in emerging markets
• What operating on the ground in Africa actually teaches you
• Building businesses through adversity, uncertainty and change
• Challenging conventional business models
I enjoy conversations where the host challenges my position rather than simply agreeing with it.
If your audience is interested in what happens when entrepreneurship, capital, mining and Africa collide with the realities of execution, we'll have plenty to talk about.
