About Me

Hi, I am Catalina, author of "Conflicted: Voices of Central American Migrants." I am from Costa Rica but was raised in Honduras, where I lived for 18 years. Because of my double roots, I was often called "La Ticatracha" a mix of "tica," a colloquial term for Costa Rican and “catracha,” a colloquial term for Honduran.

My interest in Central American affairs is rooted in a region that has always been home to my family. My interest in migration started when a 1979 revolution brought about unrest in Nicaragua, forcing part of my family to be expelled to Costa Rica. Growing up in Honduras, I met many people with similar stories. I hold both a B.S. and an M.A. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and am currently based in Washington DC.
