About Me

I'm an Irish novelist, poet and translator living in Brazil since 2000. I hold an MA in Philosophy from University College Dublin, Ireland, and am the author of the speculative-fiction novel Hibernaculum, (Out Of This World Press, 2023), about the myriad uses of synthetic human hibernation in a world facing economic, societal and environmental collapse.

I also published the children’s book O Lago Secou (Companhia das Letrinhas, 2013)

I translate fiction, nonfiction and film scripts from Portuguese. My nonfiction translation work tends to be in the areas of art, architecture, philosophy, anthropology, history and the environment. I have also translated political memoirs. Standouts include Operation Car Wash, Jorge Pontes and Marcio Anselmo (Bloomsbury), and Ideas to Postpone The End of the World, by Brazilian Indigenous leader Ailton Krenak.

Fiction includes the novel There Were Many Horses, by Luiz Ruffato.

I am working on the translation of a volume of poetry by Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade.

I am very interested in philosophy in literature and vice-versa.

I am one of the founding members of the poetry collective Old Scratch Press.

As a European resident in South America for over 20 years, I could contribute positively to discussions on a range of topics related to living abroad, language-learning, and cultural adaptation, bringing a Brazilian/South-American perspective to current debates, including world politics, the environment, indigenous issues, global warming, and the ideological battlefield.

As an author, I could participate in discussions on present directions in literature, comparative literature (Brazilian/Anglophone), the role/importance of science-fiction/speculative fiction, genre-fiction elements in literary fiction (what is that anyway?), and the role/relevance of poetry today.

As someone with a background in philosophy, I like to take a philosophical approach to discussions. I have no traditional ideological bias, as I don’t believe stringent ideology is a positive contributor to anything, so I would be a good “devil’s advocate” in debates with people coming from clear left or right-wing standpoints on issues.
