Most HS and college students are taught to do a close reading of the Shakespeare texts to help them develop critical thinking skills. When we do this, we can only say with 100% certainty that the signatures on his will are very messy, and lead many people to think he might have been illiterate. But his name is listed as the author of many great plays, so the logical question arises: did a lower-middle-class country bumpkin, truly write them?
People who do not subscribe to the belief that William Shakespeare of Stratford upon Avon wrote the canon are called Anti-Stratfordians, however, I don’t particularly like the term Anti-Stratfordian because I have nothing against the town of Stratford.
I would call myself an Anti-Shaxberdian as that is one of the ways people spelled it, and he acted as a beard for the earl of Oxford.
