About Me

A native of the southside of Chicago and a proud graduate of Chicago Public Schools, Dr. Lionel E. Allen, Jr. is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where he teaches a signature pedagogy course on cycles of inquiry, a course on improving education organizations, and co-leads the full-year residency course for aspiring school leaders. Lionel has over twenty years of experience as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and chief academic officer. He is an education reform consultant, a leadership coach, and a frequently invited speaker. He is also the founder of ed LEADERS MATTER, an organization designed to improve schools by focusing intently on leadership development and co-founder and design team member of the Aspire Fellowship, a program established to diversify the principal pipeline. His work has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, CNN, PBS, and Edutopia as part of their “Schools That Work” series. His upcoming book, Lead with C.AR.E.: Strategies for Building Culturally Competent and Affirming Schools, will be released in June. In this book, Lionel argues that the educational community's hyper focus on quantifiable student outcomes have created oppressive schools and drastically undermined the academic experiences of America's students.
