“Join me in the collaborative activity that is reading, and let me teach you to do so mindfully. Kids and parents - ready, set, GO!”
I am a now 58-year-old mom-poet and a storyteller. I happened upon early motherhood success putting my then young children to bed by using silly poems, laid on a pillow ready for little eyes at bedtime. They came to be called Nite-Notes and were wildly successful in promoting morning conversations and much needed rest for my tired body - our bedtime routine shrunk by three quarters!
I am a proponent and practitioner of mindfulness, finding it indispensable in managing the sticks and stones of life. Coming to the practice far too late, but knowing its benefits, it has become my mission to sneak it into the lives of children in any way possible.
In my life experience, I struggled through the challenges of raising a young child with a brain tumor and saw a second adult child through neck and brain surgery. In doing so, I came to understand our rare genetic and often handicapping syndrome called Ehler's Danlos, all the while juggling my now 32-years of marriage and then gainful employment - boy did I drop some balls in the process! I learned knowledge is power and that patience and perseverance are true survival skills.
In my first career, I was an Audiologist. Having worked with and listened to children for 30 years, I gained insight into what makes them smile. I found they need to know you care, they need to laugh, and they need not be scared. Most importantly, when they are scared, they must know how to cope-kindness, humor and mindfulness seem to be the key.
In my present career as a children’s book author, I hope to inspire a triad of kindness, humor, and mindfulness in the lives of those who read my words. I hope to re-connect little ones with their older counterparts, for they have forgotten how to converse. I will use what I know to be true, all the while keeping patience and perseverance in my back pockets. It is a daunting task, but I am up for the challenge. You see, I truly believe that we should read to imagine; we should imagine then write and in doing so, must always remember that words matter as much each one of us does.
