About Me

I am a former US diplomat, political economist and environmental entrepreneur. As one of the first US diplomats into Libya in 2004-2006, and subsequently a witness to the 2012 attack, I have a unique perspective on the long-tail origins and domestic and foreign policy consequences of the attack and the resulting scandal. Benghazi was truly an event that shaped the world we live in today, from the election of Trump, to extended wars in Syria, Libya and Yemen, to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Iran's efforts to get The Bomb. I hold a PhD from UC Berkeley in Agricultural and Resource Economics, an MA from Stanford and a BA from Yale in Middle East Languages and Literatures. I have been a two-time Fulbright Fellow, and a fellow/ sr fellow at Yale, the Dubai School of government, CSIS, SOAS, and others. My work has appeared in the New York Times, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, BBC, Forbes, and more.
