About Me

Just over five years ago I decided that I wanted to travel the world and bought a 42ft offshore sailing boat. Since then I've travelled around Europe and Africa by boat and plane working remotely for tech companies and on my own projects.

I was born in a small town in Kenya and Swahili is my first language with English a close second. In my younger years I travelled all over the continent in our parents beaten up Nissan Patrol to Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Mozambique, Malawi and Ghana.

When I left Tanzania at 18 I headed to the Netherlands where I did a degree in Astrophysics and Modern literature. Then headed to the UK and completed a PGCE before deciding that I wanted to travel some more.

I am now just starting on a new journey of setting up a sustainable coliving community on the coast of Kenya.

Areas of interest:

  • Full stack senior developer (Ruby, JS, Rails, React, Ionic);
  • Smart contracts, ETH, NFTs - I've built various bits of tech around ETH chain;
  • Boat life, sailing, travelling and being a digital nomad;
  • Sustainable business in Africa, specifically Kenya;
  • Knitting, crocheting, sewing and general crafting;

Full stack senior developer (Ruby, JS, Rails, React, Ionic);

Coding for eight years for companies like JRNI, Bloom & Wild and Wool and the Gang. Last year I build and deployed my first Ionic React app. I've worked in teams as a snr engineer, tech lead and engineering manager.

Smart contracts, ETH, NFTs - I've built various bits of tech around ETH chain;

I've been working on anti-fraud tools for ETH NFT projects as well as a smart contract. While I'm fairly new to this space I've conquered a lot of interesting issues such as generative art using python as a ruby dev.

Happy to talk about our project and how we're hoping to use it to drive social change in rural Kenya.

Boat life, sailing, travelling and being a digital nomad;

Just over ten years ago I had never set foot on a sailing boat. Now I own one and have sailed through gale force conditions at all times of the year. Happy to talk about living on a boat, tiny home life, nomad life, the communities we've encountered as well as travelling plans for the future.

Sustainable business in Africa, specifically Kenya;

While I am a former teacher my belief that good education is the solution to a lot of the world's issues remains a constant. Africa and countries like Kenya have excellent 4G infrastructure and well educated work forces who are fluent in multiple languages.

What they have been lacking are organisations to close the gap and help them make the move to online working. I am currently working on a project to set-up a sustainable coliving hotel in coastal Kenya that will serve digital nomads as well as helping upskill the local population to give them better employment options.

Knitting, crocheting, sewing and general crafting;

Nothing makes me happier than sitting down with a cup of tea when the boat is peaceful and quiet and having a good afternoon crafting session. Knitting and crocheting are at the top of my favourite things to do to wind down.

I've also tackled other projects like making cushions and bags from our old sail material. Would love to share my passion here with others.
